A camera may record video yet remain unsuitable for a particular long take. Duration can be limited by format, temperature, storage, power or a device-specific restriction. Read the guidance for the exact mode and confirm it through a relevant test. A headline maximum does not automatically describe your setup at the room temperature you will actually encounter.

Consider the limits separately

A depleted battery, full card and thermal shutdown are different causes. Check them independently. Some devices split long recordings into several files without necessarily losing content; others end the take. Inspect behaviour in the editor rather than inferring completeness directly from the number of files created on the card.

Use media suitable for the selected mode and confirm available capacity. Required write performance depends on format and data rate. A card working at lower quality does not validate every more demanding setting. Secure existing material before preparing cards for the test, and keep their status clear so a formatting step cannot remove unverified footage.

Reproduce the actual operating state

Test with the intended lens, display position, microphone and any external recorder. Wireless connections and external power can also change operation. Do not rely solely on a brief run from a cold start. If several consecutive takes are expected, include that workload in the trial instead of testing a condition that will not resemble the filming day.

Observe manufacturer heat and handling warnings. A higher temperature cutoff, where available, is not blanket permission for every situation. Keep ventilation clear and use suitable power sources. An improvised fan can add noise and does not replace checking permitted operating conditions. Decide beforehand what interruption or alternative is possible if a warning appears during the session.

Demonstrate completeness

Let the test cover the required duration with an appropriate margin. Afterwards, inspect all generated files and their joins, not merely the first clip. A continuous visible time reference or traceable action can help expose gaps. Check audio synchronisation at both the beginning and ending as well, especially when a separate recorder is part of the setup.

For an unrepeatable conversation, a second independent recording may help if it genuinely addresses another failure path. Two devices sharing the same unreliable power source do not provide complete redundancy. Finally, record the tested duration, settings and conditions. The result applies to that arrangement; meaningful changes require another check rather than an assumption that the earlier result still covers everything.
